Our Leader Spotlight includes advice and insights from our clients and friends. It is our pleasure to shine the light on leaders who inspire growth, collaboration, and impact.

Meet Sandy Thompson, Executive Director, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church

Most important lesson you’ve learned about building and leading a team: "The most important lesson I’ve learned about building and leading a team is that success starts with the right people in the right roles. I look for individuals whose skills can grow but whose character and personality naturally complement the team. Skills can be taught; values and temperament are much harder to change. Once the team is in place, I focus on equipping them with the tools, training, and support they need, while fostering a culture of shared goals, accountability, and encouragement. Strong teams are built not only on ability, but on trust and alignment."

Helping people grow and succeed in their roles:

"I help my people grow and succeed by creating an environment where they have the training, mentorship, and tools they need to thrive. I connect them with key relationships and resources that support their development, while providing regular feedback and encouragement. Just as important, I listen, learning what’s going well and where they feel challenged, so we can address those areas together, set clear goals, and celebrate progress. Growth happens when people feel equipped, supported, and heard."

Balancing organizational goals with people’s needs when facing a tough decision:

"I start with people. My priority is to listen, understand their perspective, and come alongside them to explain the reasons behind a decision. When staff members see the bigger picture, we can work together toward a better outcome, even if the decision is difficult or not their first choice. Clear communication and genuine connection are essential; they build trust and help align individual needs with organizational goals so that, ultimately, we move forward together."
